Who is GD Pilates suitable for?
Physiotherapists use Pilates as part of rehabilitation for muscle imbalances that may have developed by poor posture, injury and pain. I use APPI Modified Pilates that has been devised by Physiotherapists and have taken the original 34 mat work exercises developed by Joseph Pilates and modified them to create a progressive approach to core stability training to deliver safe and effective Pilates.

Is it safe for me to do pilates?
It is important to build up your Pilates practice slowly starting with the beginner levels and always doing a warm up. Make sure you watch the introductory videos that explain to you the correct set up position, finding neutral spine and activating trans abs. Pilates should be challenging but it should not cause pain so always work within your own ability and listen to your body. If certain exercises cause pain – please stop, attempt an easier version of the exercise if possible or just stop and rest. If unsure, please do consult with your GP or medical practitioner.

Can I still do pilates if I have a bad back?
As a Chartered Physiotherapist I regularly recommend Pilates for back pain. I offer progressive classes starting with the basics to ensure you have the correct foundations as you build up the exercises slowly and safely. Pilates will help you get the correct muscles working to help you have a proactive approach to your back pain. It is important you work within the limits of pain and remember precise, controlled, quality movement will help reinforce good movement patterns and help reduce pain.

How long until I start to see/feel the benefits of Pilates?
It’s no secret that any exercise always makes us feel better and this is due to the endorphins released by the body. Regular practice of Pilates will build strength, mobilise joints and help stabilise your body. It will also help increase your postural awareness – you will be walking taller and feeling so much stronger in just a few weeks.
